For James Baldwin’s Birthday we are Reclaiming Jimmy

For immediate release

Evidence to Exist Research Group invite you to Baldwin 97 – James Baldwin: The Price of The Ticket on 1 August 2021 at Stanley Arts, London. The event is a celebration, starting with a screening of The Price of The Ticket.

While Baldwin’s words provide hope for futures and enables us to identify and celebrate what is possible and what endures; one may perceive a limitation of the film is that it is American, about an American black gay icon that centres the American experience. Following the feature film, we will showcase additional contemporary short films to focus our gaze on the UK; films that will serve as catalyst for hopeful more local conversations. Collectively the films we screen will provide rich social and cultural prompts that derive from a diversity of places.

The event culminates with what we call the Long Table Discussion a multigenerational panel of Black Queer Activists will discuss the film and invite YOU the audience to participate, to physically join, to take a seat at the Long Table, a table built for you; and to contribute to hopeful conversations made more urgent in our collective consciousness in recent years including those gender and racial equality.

David McAlmont, Patron of the Evidence to Exist Research Group, said: “The Price of The Ticket is a powerful film that showcases Baldwin speaking words that continue to resonate still.”

“This event celebrates brown and blackness; queerness and being unapologetic about all that with an afternoon of films, discussion and performances.”
